Forklift Thorough Examinations
Westexe Forklifts is accredited by CFTS (Consolidated Fork Truck Services) to carry out Thorough Examinations, and is a proud member of the UKMHA (UK Material Handling Association).
A Thorough Examination is the forklift equivalent of a car’s MOT: a mandatory check that every safety-critical part of your truck is in safe working order. It isn’t the same as routine servicing or maintenance. You need one whether or not your truck has recently been serviced, and the requirement applies to hired trucks as well as those you own.
As a CFTS-accredited company, we examine every truck to a nationally recognised standard, checking both the lifting and driving components. You can be confident your fleet is safe, compliant and examined in line with the law.
Lifting Equipment
Examined to meet LOLER 1998. The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations cover everything involved in raising and lowering a load, including the mast, forks, chains and hydraulics.
Safety Components
Examined to meet PUWER 1998. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations cover the truck’s other safety-related parts, such as brakes, steering and tyres, so the whole machine is checked, not just the lifting gear.
Regular Intervals
Required at least once a year, and often more frequently. How often depends on the type of truck and how it’s used. If you’re not sure when your next Thorough Examination is due, give us a call and we’ll check for you.

Required by Law.
Not All Thorough Examinations Are Equal
Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, every employer has a duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees, so far as is reasonably practicable.
Keeping your forklifts properly examined is a key part of meeting that duty. The Health and Safety Executive is clear that regular inspections carried out as part of a maintenance plan or scheduled service don’t count as a Thorough Examination. It’s also crucial that the examination covers both the lifting and the driving mechanisms of the truck, and surprisingly, not all of them do.
CFTS Accredited.
Accredited, Trusted and Recognised
Our Thorough Examinations are carried out by a CFTS-accredited Competent Person, so you know your truck is in safe hands.
CFTS is the national accreditation scheme for forklift Thorough Examinations. Its seal is your guarantee that your truck has been examined carefully, with key components such as brakes and steering checked alongside the lifting mechanism. Not every Thorough Examination covers both, so choosing an accredited provider gives you complete peace of mind.
As a member of the UKMHA, the trade association for the UK materials handling industry, we’re committed to the high standards of safety and service our customers expect.
Accredited Driver Training.
Are Your Operators Trained?
Like Thorough Examinations, forklift driver training is a legal requirement.
We offer ITSSAR-accredited novice, refresher and conversion courses on all types of forklift and materials handling equipment, delivered by our own experienced instructors.
